2013 has been a monumental year for gay rights around the world, not least in the US where the Defense of Marriage Act (which denied millions of gay Americans over 1100 rights) was struck down by the Supreme Court.

This was a truly life changing decision for me and thousands of others. For the 6 years we’ve been together, my American Husband has not been allowed to petition for a greencard for me, his British-born spouse. DOMA meant that I was only able to visit the US as a tourist and it put me on a plane home 17 times before it was struck down.

I submitted this photograph to a competition hoping that it could depict the emotional black hole that we both visited regularly over the past 6 years. I am seen in the photograph waving goodbye for what might be a 6 month or longer separation from my Husband.
